A McDonald’s in Surprise, Arizona, has earned an unenviable distinction. It is the lowest-rated location in America, according to a new ranking based on Google reviews. The restaurant, at 23512 N 163rd Ave, has an average rating of just 1.55 stars from 745 reviews, with customers complaining about slow service and frustrating drive-thru experiences.

The ranking was compiled by SEO Backlinks, whose researchers examined Google Maps listings for McDonald’s locations across the United States and ranked them by their average star ratings. One reviewer described the Surprise, Arizona spot as “By far the worst service of any McDonald’s,” while another complained that drive-thru wait times were “horrendous,” even when traffic was light.

The restaurants taking the bottom spot

The Surprise restaurant sits at the bottom of the ranking, but it isn’t the only McDonald’s struggling to impress customers. A location on US-20 in Goshen, Indiana, comes in second with 1.99 stars from 550 reviews. An outlet on West Magnolia Avenue in Auburn, Alabama, ranks third at 2.27 stars, based on 1,365 reviews. Another location in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, follows closely with 2.28 stars from 2,277 reviews.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport also makes the bottom five, with its McDonald’s earning 2.33 stars from 531 reviews. The remaining locations in the ten lowest-rated McDonald's are in Stafford, Virginia; Auburn, Alabama; Brooklyn, Michigan; Roy, Utah; and Corbin, Kentucky. Their ratings range from 2.37 to 2.48 stars.

Oliver Weston, founder of SEO Backlinks, pointed to the challenge of standing out when the menu and prices are largely consistent across locations. “Every McDonald’s sells the same menu at much the same price, so the star rating on Google is the only thing that sets one apart from the next,” Weston said.

Some McDonald’s locations are getting it right

The other end of the ranking tells a different story. A McDonald’s at 2130 E Main St in Eagle Pass, Texas, claims the top spot among the highest-rated locations, with an average of 4.25 stars from 2,159 reviews.

A restaurant in Calexico, California, follows at 4.23 stars from 3,718 reviews, while the McDonald’s at 10207 Lakewood Blvd in Downey, California, earns 4.22 stars from 3,385 reviews. A location in Florham Park, New Jersey, comes next with 4.20 stars, followed by a restaurant in Brownsville, Texas, rated 4.17 stars. A McDonald’s in Mattituck, New York, shares that rating.

The rest of the top ten includes locations in New Hyde Park, New York; Chicago, Illinois; San Diego, California; and another restaurant in Eagle Pass, Texas. Their ratings range from 4.14 to 4.16 stars.

A satisfying fast-food run or a frustrating one

At the end of the day, most people just want their McDonald’s order to be right, their fries to be hot and the drive-thru line to move before they start questioning their life choices. Customer service matters—and apparently, where you stop can make all the difference. So, if your local McDonald’s has you checking your bag three times before you leave or wondering why a simple burger takes 20 minutes, at least you know it might not just be you.
