Walmart's sold-out rotisserie chicken purse is reselling for 10 times its price
So you love the Walmart rotisserie chickens, and you purchase them often. Plenty of people seem to share that opinion, but some are taking it so far that they're willing to pay 10 times the retail price for a Walmart-branded rotisserie chicken purse.
A weird and wacky purse
If you're scratching your head, you're not alone. The purse is a limited-edition bag, priced at $5.97. Savvy Walmart shoppers, you may have noticed that's the same price as the rotisserie chickens. Yes, that was on purpose.
The purse features a picture of the famous rotisserie chicken, along with the product's labeling details. It's mouth-watering, it's weird, and it's wacky.
A hot item the moment it was released
The purse was announced via press release on Aug. 31 and then hit store shelves on Sept. 1. Not only were shoppers hyped about the release, it actually sold out within hours.
The limited-edition bag is now such a hot commodity that it is selling on Mercari for almost 10 times its original price.
“With more than 15K social mentions in the last year, Walmart’s rotisserie chicken has officially reached a whole new level of fan-favorite status,” Walmart said in a statement. “We wanted to celebrate this fandom by giving the rotisserie chicken its own moment. The Chicken Purse turns that love into something customers can carry with them.”
Playfully being called a "Cherkin" by shoppers
The purse was such a hit that it even got a nickname - the "Cherkin". This is meant to be a playful take on the wildly popular and exclusive Birkin bags.
Just like with many fashion items, there are a couple of styles to choose from. There is the Lemon Pepper Rotisserie Chicken Purse and the Traditional Rotisserie Chicken Purse Charm.
Both types are the same size and style; it's just the picture on the purse that differs. The purses are made from synthetic leather with a polyester lining and have a shoulder strap.
You may still get a chance to nab one
If you're disappointed you weren't able to get the purse and you're not willing to shell out the big bucks on Mercari, you may still be in luck. Walmart has hinted on its website that there may be "more cooking".
