Walmart recalls popular nut butter over salmonella risks
Walmart shoppers in 19 states are being warned to check their pantries after a Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter product was recalled over possible Salmonella contamination. The recall affects a specific batch of the Walmart-exclusive product after routine testing found traces of the bacteria. So if you have a jar sitting next to your peanut butter, jam, or that one mystery condiment you bought six months ago and forgot about, it’s time for a pantry investigation.
The recalled nut butter is easy to identify
The recall only applies to one lot of Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter made by New York-based Botticelli Foods and manufactured in Italy by Gustibus Alimentari S.r.l. The affected product comes in a 6.7-ounce glass jar with the lot number LB028ACP04. It has an expiration date of January 28, 2027 and a UPC of 194346207961.
The product was sold exclusively at Walmart stores across 19 states, including Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Tennessee, Washington, and others.
Why Salmonella is no joke
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Walmart was notified of the possible contamination after Salmonella was detected in three jars during a routine inventory inspection by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
The good news is no illnesses have been reported so far. The less-good news is that Salmonella is not something you want invited to your breakfast table.
Salmonella infections can cause symptoms like diarrhea, fever, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. For most healthy adults, it can mean a miserable few days. But for young children, older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and other vulnerable groups, infections can become much more serious.
In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and lead to complications affecting the arteries, heart, joints, and other parts of the body.
The advice for Walmart shoppers
If you bought the affected pistachio nut butter, keep in mind that the FDA warns against eating it. Stop using the product immediately and return it to a Walmart store for a full refund.
