With tariff refunds being given out to businesses across the United States, Walmart is taking a bold approach. Walmart has announced major price cuts nationwide so that shoppers also get in on the action when it comes to refunds.

Tariff refunds in the billions

Walmart's tariff refunds were no small number, totaling an eye-popping $2.9 billion.

This coincided with the slowest sales growth the retailer has experienced since the start of the pandemic. Sales growth for the last quarter was just 2.6%, versus last year at 4.6% during the same period.

The mixed bag of data caused Walmart's shares to fall by over 9% this week.

Walmart's sales could be a bellwether for other retailers

Walmart is such a giant retailer that its sales and stats often act like a bellwether for the entire industry. If Walmart experiences a drop in spending, there's a good chance its competition is feeling the same heat.

The company blames factors like customers choosing to shop online instead of in-store, and lower drug pricing for GLP-1 weight loss drugs. The higher gas prices are also cutting into disposable income for many Americans.

“It sort of states the obvious, (we are) seeing some incremental pressure on the consumer relative to the beginning of the year with higher fuel prices,” said Walmart CFO John David Rainey.

Rainey went on to say that as prices get over $4 a gallon, “there’s a psychological impact to that. That there are choices that consumers are making.”

Tariff refunds translate to price cuts

Walmart is making a big push to get more customers in the store by using tariff refunds to finance price cuts and "price investments".

Shoppers could soon see these price cuts showing up on shelves, which could entice you to spend a little more money.

Comparison shopping is your best approach

As these price cuts start rolling out in stores, your best approach is comparison shopping because there's a good chance you could start finding deals.
