Getting teens to take their attendance at school seriously can be a real struggle. This is why Detroit schools are taking a unique approach and rewarding perfect attendance with cash.

"Perfect Attendance Pays" at least in Detroit schools

Perfect attendance is a badge of honor for many students, but Detroit schools are taking it one step further. The city's "Perfect Attendance Pays" program is rewarding high school students $100 per week for perfect attendance.

Middle school students can also get in on the program and can be rewarded $50 per week for perfect attendance during designated periods.

The program doesn't run during the full school year

Before teens and kids get too excited about the potential cash windfall, the program doesn't operate the full 180-day school year. Instead, it is broken down into weekly cycles between January and March.

During the worst of the winter weather, attendance takes an even bigger hit than normal. Seasonal illnesses start spreading, resulting in many absences.

If teens show up every day during the winter stretch, they could get up to $1,000. That can go a long way.

Teens will get the cash in the form of a Visa

Rather than passing out cash at school, teens will get an electronic Visa gift card.

The idea is that these cards can be used pretty much anywhere, making them as versatile as cash. An electronic gift card is also impossible to lose, so teens don't have to worry about misplacing it.

The program is administered by the central office team, which creates a report of students with perfect attendance. At the end of that cycle/week, qualifying students will get the gift card sent to their DPSCD email.

A unique and bold approach

Whether you're a student, parent, or someone who remembers your high school years, this program is incredibly unique and bold. If it helps motivate students to set goals and achieve them, it could be exactly what's needed.
