This is your public service announcement to do an inventory check of your fridge or freezer. The USDA has issued an urgent alert for Costco pasta thanks to undeclared shellfish allergens.

Ravioli is mislabeled

The public health alert is for Giovanni Rana ravioli that is sold at Costco stores.

The ravioli may contain shrimp and lobster, which don't appear on the packaging label. For anyone with a shellfish allergy, this could pose a serious risk.

Check your packaging

If you've recently bought pasta at Costco, here are the details you need to know.

The alert is for the 32-ounce refrigerated Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Cream Burrata Cheese Ravioli. It has a use-before date from May 14 through June 25, 2026.

You can also check the establishment number on the package to verify. You'll find it inside the USDA mark of inspection. Those packages with the number “44870” are affected.

The pasta was sold in Costcos in New Jersey and Maryland. Because they stopped selling the pasta, there was no need to issue a recall notice.

Get rid of the pasta if you bought it

So what should you do if you've got the pasta in question? The USDA is telling people to dispose of it, or you can take it back to the Costco you bought it from for a refund.

“The ravioli labeled as beef and burrata may actually contain shrimp filling in lobster sauce,” said the USDA in its statement. “The shrimp and lobster, known allergens (shellfish), are not declared on the product label.”

Two consumer complaints prompted the USDA to investigate, and then issue a health alert.

A shellfish allergy can be very serious

Because shellfish allergies can be so serious, this health alert shouldn't be taken lightly. The good news is that the situation was caught relatively quickly.
