The Simpsons may finally come to an end after season 40
Few shows can say they have been on the air for more than a decade, let alone several decades. The Simpsons has been on for three-plus decades, but it looks like it may be the end of an era, with talks going round that the show may finally be coming to a close.
Predictions only, no final word
Before anyone gets too worked up, at this point it's predictions and rumors only. There's no actual word on if and when The Simpsons may end. As the show gets ready to air its 38th season, Nancy Cartwright, the voice of the iconic Bart Simpson, predicts its ending. Cartwright thinks that there's a good chance the 40th season will be the last.
In terms of official news, Matt Selman, the showrunner, said that when the show does end, it probably won't be with fanfare. Selman predicts it will just be a regular episode, with nothing to mark the ending.
Season 40 will drop in 2028
In spring 2025, the network (Fox) ordered four additional seasons of the show. That would take it to season 40, which would premiere in 2028. Selman spoke about what a series finale would look like earlier this year when he spoke to TheWrap.
“We did an episode about a year and a half ago that was like a parody of the series finale. We jammed every possible series finale concept into one show, so that was sort of my way of saying we’re never going to do a series finale. We did a series finale in the middle of the show that made fun of all the ideas of wrapping everything up or ending.”
No one, including the cast, seems to be in a hurry to wrap it up
Predictions aside, it doesn't seem like anyone is in a hurry to cancel the show. Cartwright said she'd love to keep going as long as possible. Like with most shows, it will probably come down to viewership numbers.
For now, you can get your fill of The Simpsons when Season 38 premieres on Sept. 27 at 8/7c on Fox.
