After years of rumors, leaks, and “is it actually happening?” debates, it’s official. Rick and Morty is heading to the big screen.

Series co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed that a feature-length movie is now in development. The film will be directed by Jacob Hair, who has been deeply involved in the show since season 4. If you have watched some of the standout episodes from that era, you have already seen his work. The Vat of Acid Episode, Rattlestar Ricklactica, and The Old Man and the Seat.

Those episodes are known for packing a lot of emotion, chaos, and storytelling into a short runtime. Now imagine that stretched to a full movie.

Choosing Hair isn’t random. As supervising director, he already helps shape how every episode of the show looks and feels. So instead of bringing in an outside director, the team is keeping things in-house.

Don’t expect a “serious” movie pivot

If you are thinking this might turn into a big cinematic reinvention, that’s not the plan. Harmon has been pretty direct about it. The goal is not to suddenly make Rick and Morty feel like a dramatic blockbuster or shift its tone to justify being a movie.

Instead, the idea is to take a classic Rick and Morty adventure and make it longer, bigger, and more polished. Think of it as the same chaotic sci-fi and weird emotional moments, only this time with more time and budget. Basically, a “super episode” rather than a full-on reinvention.

How the movie connects to the show

One big question hasn’t been answered yet. Is this movie part of the main story, or just a standalone adventure? Right now, it could go either way. It might slot between seasons or exist completely on its own. Or it might do what the show usually does and ignore continuity altogether, which would be very on-brand.
