Publix recalls popular frozen fruit after 12 reported illnesses

If you recently picked up frozen blueberries from Publix, you may want to check the package before making your next smoothie. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of some GreenWise frozen blueberries after 12 confirmed illnesses linked to a potentially dangerous strain of E. coli.

The recall involves 10-ounce bags labeled “GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries,” but not every bag is affected. The recall only applies to products with the lot code 60401 and a best-by date of February 9, 2028.

Contamination details and health impacts

According to the FDA, the blueberries may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28 (E. coli O145), a type of bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. The agency revealed that the recall was initiated after customers reported digestive illnesses, with 12 confirmed cases linked to the product.

While most healthy people recover within about a week, E. coli infections can be much more serious for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In severe cases, the infection can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening complication.

Take a minute to check

Keep in mind that the affected blueberries were sold exclusively at Publix stores in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee. If you live in any of these states and have one of the recalled bags, don’t eat it.

Instead, you should throw it away, or return it to your local Publix store for a full refund. If you have already eaten the blueberries, keep an eye out for symptoms, such as severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, or vomiting. If symptoms develop or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
