Popular mall retailer Carter's is closing 150 locations
Parents who count on Carter's when shopping for clothing for their kids aren't going to be happy about the latest news from the retailer. Carter's announces the closure of 150 locations across the country.
Parents may face long travels
Malls across America are going to look a lot different after 150 Carter's locations close. For parents, it means you may need to travel further to find a nearby Carter's, or resort to ordering online and guessing on sizing.
Originally the company said it would close 100 stores over three years, but now it has increased to 150 across North America by the end of 2026.
Massive cuts to keep the company afloat
The closures are rumored to be a way of keeping the company afloat and revitalizing the stores that remain open.
“2025 was a year of meaningful progress in stabilizing our business while responding to significant new tariffs,” said former CEO Douglas C. Palladini in a press release.
“We took actions to right-size our cost structure and we launched several important initiatives to improve the productivity of our merchandise assortments and store fleet.”
The human toll of the closures
The company has said that the closures will result in about 300 staff being laid off. The closure represents around 10% of the company's total stores. It operates more than 1,000 in operation between OshKosh B'gosh and Carter's.
Another piece of news from the retailer is that it has named a new CEO. The company hired Sharon Price John, who was previously the CEO of Build-A-Bear.
"Sharon’s extensive industry experience, especially in the children’s space, and her demonstrated record of success position her well to lead the next chapter of Carter’s transformation and growth," Carter's said in a press release.
Making life a little less convenient for parents
This news is sure to make life a little less convenient for parents, but with so many companies downsizing as of late, it doesn't come as a surprise.
