People will go to great lengths to get away with scams, with some being more outlandish than others. Please file this under "outlandish": three people in California were sentenced for an elaborate insurance fraud that involved dressing up in a bear costume.

Staging a crime scene

This one is wild, but try to follow along. The incident took place in 2024 when three Californian men claimed damage to their luxury cars (a Rolls-Royce and a Mercedes).

The men said there was a bear attack, and that the animal got into the cars and trashed them.

As part of their insurance claims, they submitted videos that showed a bear inside their vehicle. They also took pictures of scratches on the doors and seats, again, supposedly from a bear attack.

In total, the value of the fraudulent claims was almost $142,000.

The incident took place in the San Bernardino Mountains, making it believable that bears would be around.

What actually happened?

Here's where things get weird. A California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist took a look at the video footage that the men had submitted to their insurance company.

The biologist’s conclusion was something straight out of a comedy movie. The "bear" in the cars was nothing but a person dressed up in a bear suit.

A search warrant was presented, and California detectives found the bear suit from the video in the home of one of the suspects.

Sentencing handed down

All three accused had to stand trial and pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud. They were sentenced to a weekend jail program, then probation. Additionally, two of them have to pay restitution of $50,000.

Authorities have since said that a fourth person will now face a hearing in September, related to this case.

There is such a thing as too big a lie

This case goes to show that there is such a thing as too big a lie, and it then acts as a giveaway. This was just too crazy to be true.
