New data shows most Americans are far poorer than numbers suggest
If it seems like your budget needs to stretch further than before, you're not wrong. New data is showing just how skewed American wealth is, with the US median wealth being quite low.
Not exactly the strong, rich economy
Every headline seems to tout a strong American economy, booming times, and that Americans are "wealthier than Europeans." For many everyday Americans, this doesn't feel like the reality they're dealing with.
There are extremely rich people living in the country, but they aren't the majority. Their staggering net worth distorts the true picture for the average household, masking deep wealth inequality.
New data digs deeper and exposes many red flags
Some new data has emerged that digs deeper and doesn't just rely on the premise that America is the richest country in the world. The data showed that compared to some other advanced world economies, America is lagging, and by a fair margin.
Considering many have been using America's supposed top wealth status as a wedge issue, the latest information may be an eye-opener for many.
Comparing average and median wealth
A 2026 report, published by the major Swiss bank UBS, looked at average wealth in a more in-depth way. It included median wealth and average wealth per adult in the 30 richest economies.
When comparing average wealth per adult, the US was number two, with Switzerland sitting well ahead. But then, when the report compared median wealth per adult, suddenly the US was 28 out of 30.
In a shocking contrast, the US didn't just miss the top spot—it only beat out two countries: Greece and Germany.
Not the cash cow it claims to be
If you're tired of hearing about a booming economy and not feeling any of it yourself, know that you're not alone. The extremely wealthy appear to be the only ones rolling in riches.
