A strange object on Mars had scientists doing a double take. The object was spotted in an image captured by NASA’s rover, and it didn’t look like your typical rock. It looked smooth, cone-shaped, and almost metallic.

Naturally, the internet did what it does best and speculation started immediately.

But now, there’s more to the story.

NASA says it’s just a rock shaped by Martian wind

According to NASA, there is nothing mysterious going on here. Their explanation is that the rock is naturally formed. More specifically, it is a rock shaped by wind erosion over time.

Mars might not have the same atmospheric conditions as Earth, but its winds – even if they are weaker – can still sculpt some pretty wild shapes over long periods.

And this isn’t the first time. NASA pointed out that Mars has produced formations that look like flowers, book pages, and even a bear face.

“We’ve seen many, many Martian rocks that exhibit shapes that, from a particular angle, look like a more familiar shape,” a spokesperson for the space agency said.

So, they’re saying the cone is just another case of your brain trying to make sense of random shapes. This falls under something called pareidolia, according to NASA. Pareidolia is when your brain sees familiar objects in random patterns. Clouds that look like animals, faces in walls, and in this case, party hats on Mars.

Not everyone is buying that explanation

Standing tall among the doubting Thomases in this case is astrophysicist Avi Loeb, who’s known for exploring unconventional space theories. Not convinced this is just another Mars rock, he argues that the object looks too smooth and the shape is too clean. According to him, the rock does not match the surrounding ones and could actually be human-made debris.

Loeb also believes the rock is much larger than NASA claims. While the agency says it’s about 1 cm, Loeb estimated it closer to 20 cm.

He is now challenging the space agency to prove their claims.

As always, internet users are split, with some accepting that it’s just a rock while others have questions.

And then, there are the people already joking about it. Isn’t a perfect little cone sitting alone on Mars just the perfect meme material?
