If you bought Chantix between 2015 and 2021, your old smoking-cessation prescription could be worth more than just helping you quit smoking. Pfizer has agreed to pay $44 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging that Chantix was contaminated with nitrosamine, a chemical linked to cancer. And depending on how much you paid for the medication, you could be eligible for a piece of the settlement.

Here's how you could be eligible

The settlement covers people in the United States and its territories who paid for retail purchases of Chantix between September 29, 2015, and September 17, 2021. That includes consumers who paid for the medication themselves as well as certain third-party payors who covered purchases.

The lawsuit alleges that Pfizer failed to follow required manufacturing practices, resulting in Chantix becoming contaminated with nitrosamine. Nitrosamines are chemicals that can form during manufacturing or processing and are considered probable human carcinogens. Some have been linked to cancers including stomach and liver cancer.

Pfizer has not admitted wrongdoing as part of the settlement. The company agreed to pay the $44 million to resolve the allegations and put the lawsuit behind it. Chantix is a prescription medication designed to help adults stop smoking by reducing nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

It is important to note that there is no fixed payout amount yet. Under the proposed settlement, eligible class members would receive a share of the remaining settlement fund based partly on how much they paid for Chantix.

You'll need proof that you actually bought Chantix

To receive a payment, eligible class members need to submit a valid claim and provide documentation showing their Chantix purchases. That could include pharmacy receipts, credit card statements or other records showing when you purchased Chantix and how much you paid. So if you have an ancient pharmacy receipt buried in a drawer somewhere, this might be its moment.

There is a deadline, and it’s coming up

If you think you qualify, you have until September 14, 2026, to submit a claim. That same date is also the deadline for class members who want to exclude themselves from the settlement or object to it.

The court is scheduled to hold the final approval hearing on October 13, 2026. There is still time  to look through old pharmacy receipts or credit card statements. Just don't miss the September 14, 2026, claim deadline.
