The protein trend is alive and well, as McDonald's throws its hat into the ring. The fast-food giant has added labels to more than 12 menu items that serve as protein callouts, but customers have some questions.

McDonald's is the latest restaurant to join the trend

If you're one of those who tries to eat as much protein as possible, you already know that fast food chains jumped on the bandwagon. McDonald's is just the latest restaurant chain to get in on the action and highlight high-protein items.

What's leaving some people asking questions, however, are the numbers McDonald's is citing. Some customers are wary of the protein amounts being printed on the labels.

Visual badges are meant for quick reference

McDonald's isn't just promoting its high-protein options; it is also adding new labels to a handful of items. The restaurant's "visual badges" are meant to call out the amount of protein in that specific item.

You won't have to guess or look anything up. Or will you?

Customers have some questions, and they're wondering just how accurate the protein label is.

Some examples include the 10-piece Chicken McNuggets meal with 23 grams of protein, the Egg McMuffin with 17 grams of protein, the Filet-O-Fish with 16 grams of protein, and the Snack Wraps with 17 grams of protein.

Customers are questioning things such as the Sausage Biscuit, which doesn't seem to account for the sausage, and the Double Cheeseburger, which doesn't have double the protein.

Badges have now been rolled out

You'll find these labels on 17 items spread out across the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. These labels have already been rolled out, so you can find them now.

If you're looking for these new visual badges on the physical menu in the restaurant, you won't find them there. They only appear on the kiosks and in the McDonald's app.

You may need to do your own research

The protein call-outs are helpful for anyone looking to boost their protein, but this may be the case where you need to take the label with a grain of salt and double-check the math.
