There's nothing more refreshing than a sweet tea, at least that's what McDonald's customers at a Wisconsin location thought. Not so refreshing was the fact that multiple customers found worms in their sweet tea.

Customer spits the worm out after taking a sip of the drink

It's every diner's nightmare—finding something completely gross in their food or drink. And it gets worse. Three people complained of worms in their sweet tea, but one customer's account was especially stomach-churning.

A customer told the local news station that he took a sip of his sweet tea and felt something in his mouth. Realizing it wasn't ice, he spat it out into his hand and discovered it was a worm.

It's a skin-crawling episode, and as mentioned, it was more than one customer who went through it.

The type of worm makes it even worse

There's no way to spin finding a worm in your sweet tea, but it can apparently get worse.

"It's not just an earthworm — it's a sewage worm, so that makes it even worse," Joe Hauenstein told WTMJ. "You don't know what's on that worm. From it being sewage — it can have parasites, you can get sick from it, and they knew about it."

Literally, the last thing anyone wants to hear about the food or drink they just ingested.

McDonald's blames it on "beverage equipment maintenance"

The restaurant placed the blame on "beverage equipment maintenance" and said they "acted immediately" after learning about the worms.

The franchise took the machine out of service, did a deep clean, and then serviced the machine. Since then, the local health department has inspected the restaurant and given the all-clear.

It's comforting to know the location took the situation seriously, but it doesn't erase what the customers experienced.

Take a few minutes to look at your drink

If this situation teaches you one lesson, it's to take a couple of seconds to look at your drink or food before digging in. You never know what surprises could be waiting.
