For years, fans have been waiting for Game of Thrones to finally tell one of its biggest stories: Aegon’s Conquest. You know, the part with dragons, fire, and literally how Westeros became Westeros.

After years of quiet development, HBO is reportedly pulling the plug on a planned Aegon’s Conquest TV series. That story is still happening, but not the way we all expected. A big-budget movie version is moving forward instead, with a story following Aegon Targaryen conquering Westeros with dragons.

The show that almost was

This was not actually a rumored project. Back in 2024, writer Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) was developing the TV version. It had been slowly progressing behind the scenes, which usually means HBO was serious about it.

But at some point, Warner Bros. decided to run a test: develop both a TV show and a movie, then pick the stronger one.

Now, we know the winner. And unless something changes, that TV version is done.

Why HBO chose dragons on the big screen

HBO (and Warner Bros.) has already proven Game of Thrones works on TV. Between Game of Thrones itself and House of the Dragon, the franchise has proven it can dominate streaming.

Now, the studio wants a blockbuster franchise it can take to theaters. So instead of splitting resources between a show and a film, they picked one.

And Aegon’s Conquest is the most cinematic story in the entire lore. Three dragons. Massive battles. The birth of the Targaryen dynasty. With a potential release for 2028 at the earliest, fans do have a lot to look forward to.

Westeros isn’t going anywhere

This isn’t HBO backing off the Game of Thrones universe. Instead, the franchise is expanding. Just more selectively.

Right now, the lineup looks like House of the Dragon (ongoing), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (coming soon), Animated projects like The Sea Snake, and now, a full-on Game of Thrones movie.

So while one story got cut, the overall universe is still growing.

Also, it will not be very surprising if HBO circles back to TV anyway as far as Aegon I Targaryen is concerned. There is a whole follow-up era, from succession to power struggles to all the Targaryen drama, that could easily become a series later.

The show might be done (for now), but the story really isn’t. And if the movie turns out to be a box office hit, that story might be told as a series someday.
