Frontier Airlines is completely pulling out of a major airport
After just two years, Frontier Airlines will stop flying to New York's JFK Airport. What was meant to help the airline expand into more markets didn't pan out, and now Frontier is shifting gears.
Low-cost airline will focus on smaller cities
Budget-friendly Frontier Airlines entered JFK Airport in June 2024. The idea was that it would expand routes and give passengers more options.
Fast-forward a couple of years, and Frontier is leaving JFK and changing its plan entirely. Moving forward, the focus will be on smaller markets that aren't well served by airlines.
Major cities have big airports, but that also means higher costs for airlines that fly in and out of them. Airlines will pay significantly more for gate slots, landing fees, and so forth.
Last route planned for early October
The airline has announced that its last route to JFK departing from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) will be on Oct. 5. At one point, it was flying to JFK from eight different U.S. cities.
The airline won't completely disappear from the NYC market. It will keep flying from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to cities in other states.
“We periodically review and update routes based on market demand, seasonality, costs associated with operating from a particular airport, and other factors,” the airline said in a statement.
Not permanently closing the door
Even though Frontier is pulling out of JFK, it doesn't appear to be closing the door permanently.
“As with any station closure, [we] will evaluate market conditions going forward to consider a return at some point in the future,” a spokesperson said to The Points Guy.
At one point, Frontier said it may be interested in flying out of JFK's new Terminal 6 once construction is done in 2028.
You'll need to rethink your flight plans
If you had your eyes on Frontier Airlines for routes in or out of JFK, you'll need to change your plans.
