If you have ever flown through Florida’s Palm Beach International Airport, there is going to be one very noticeable difference before you even grab your luggage. The airport name. Starting in July, the airport is set to become President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

Let’s walk through the details of the name change.

It’s a full rebrand

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the legislation this week, officially clearing the way for the rename. The change was pushed through by the state legislature earlier this year and is expected to take effect July 1, pending final administrative updates.

The airport’s code, PBI, isn’t changing. But everything else is changing. We’re talking updated signage across the airport, navigation updates, changes to systems and documentation, and branding across the entire property.

And it won’t be cheap. Estimates for the renaming cost range in the millions of dollars, covering everything from physical signage to backend systems.

It is meant to reflect Trump’s ties to Florida

Supporters of the move say it is simply recognition. Trump lives in Palm Beach and frequently travels through the airport to and from his Mar-a-Lago estate. He’s also the first U.S. president to call Florida home.

According to lawmakers behind the bill, the rename is meant to recognize that connection. And while it came off to some as a move personally requested by Trump himself, DeSantis has clarified that the change wasn’t initiated by the president, but by the legislature.

Not everyone is on board

The decision didn’t pass quietly. The vote split along party lines, with critics raising concerns about the precedent set by the idea of naming a major public airport after a sitting president.

There are also concerns about how public institutions are being used.

Of course, the estimated $5.5 million cost does not help the case, as some lawmakers argued that the money could be better spent elsewhere, especially given bigger economic concerns across the U.S.

The opposition notwithstanding, the bill passed along party lines in the Senate, split 25-11.

It’s about more than one airport

The airport name change isn’t happening in isolation. Over the past year, Trump’s name has appeared on more buildings, institutions, and proposals across the U.S., something that hasn’t typically happened at this scale for a sitting president.

His name was recently added to the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Kennedy Center in Washington. Trump himself has also once suggested putting his name on Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

Depending on who you ask, this is either a fitting recognition or a rebrand that is way too expensive. But one thing everyone will agree on is that it is a change that is hard to ignore. And once the signs go up in July, people will actually fly through the newly minted hub.
