Walking into an Aldi store, you expect to do a little shopping, hopefully find some deals, and head home. That's not the case for a shopper who was left brain-damaged and in a coma after an altercation in-store.

A grocery store trip gone wrong

According to the claim, Bruce Reese, 60 years old, visited his local Aldi in South Florida last October. He was only supposed to be grabbing a few quick items, but things went off the rails.

The store's CCTV footage shows that as Reese left the store, with his service dog who was on a leash, he was "sucker-punched."

Security cameras inside the store show the altercation actually began in the aisle, and then continued as Reese exited the store.

Another customer was supposedly upset that Reese had his dog in the store.

CCTV shows suspect waiting to attack Reese

The claim argues that the suspect, Deandrea Johnson, appeared to be waiting for Reese as he left the store.

The footage also captured the moment that Reese was punched.

The family of Reese is suing Aldi for more than $30 million in damages, claiming that Aldi "did nothing" during a fight in the store aisles that led to Reese being left "brain-damaged".

Reese is dealing with some serious long-term injuries

According to Reese's family, he now suffers from serious injuries that impact his daily life. His family said it is difficult for him to do such tasks as bathing and dressing.

A series of unfortunate events

You can chalk up Reese's situation as a series of unfortunate events that seemed to spiral out of control, leaving him severely injured. As this $30 million battle heads to court, it raises a massive question for every big-box retailer. When a conflict starts at the checkout line, where does a store's 'duty to protect' end?
