Five Guys CEO pays $1.5M to staff because he didn't want to get shot
The CEO of Five Guys is taking a very different approach to bonuses. Rather than just awarding executives, the CEO is giving $1.5 million worth of bonus checks to employees, stating, "I didn't want anybody shooting me."
The kind of boss employees can rally behind
It's not every day you read about a CEO who recognizes the frontline workers and how valuable they are, but that seems to be the case with Five Guys CEO Jerry Murrell.
Murrell has announced that $1,000 bonus checks are headed to each of the company’s 1,500 U.S. locations to reward the crews who survived a rough start to the year.
The "botched" anniversary promo that started it all
It seems this unexpected employee bonus is Murrell trying to make up for a "botched" promotion that ran in February.
The restaurant chain celebrated its 40th anniversary in February with a massive promo. The problem was that the promotion was so popular that is crashed the Five Guys app and caused some physical locations to wrap it up early.
Call Five Guys a victim of their own success, but customers weren't happy and were sure to let employees know.
A lot of making up to do
Murrell understands that Five Guys not only needs to make it up to their customers, but also the employees who had to deal with the promotion fallout on the front lines.
“I didn’t want anybody shooting me in the back or anything after the first day, because we really screwed it up,” Murrell told Fortune. “We had no idea that we were going to get that kind of response.”
The BOGO promo was brought back again in mid-March with a smoother rollout.
It feels good to support a company that recognizes its employees
So the next time you're craving Five Guys, you can feel good about the company you're supporting.
