Fake 49ers player stole $1.3 million in dating scam

Dating can be difficult, and for more than two dozen unlucky people, it ended in a scam. Two people have been booked on suspicion of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud over a dating scheme that involved one of them posing as a 49ers player.

More than two dozen people conned $1.3 million in scam

This scam wasn't just a breach of trust. It resulted in 26 people being conned out of a combined $1.3 million. The alleged yearslong romance fraud involved one of the men pretending to be a wide receiver for the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.

The two people charged are Taylor Jamie Chan and Daejon Labrayae Love. Love posted photos on social media wearing official gear to give the illusion that he was a player.

An Instagram account built on fake NFL clout

The plot spanned multiple states, with prosecutors naming Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho.

The criminal complaint included screenshots from an Instagram profile that was "filled" with pictures of Love wearing 49ers gear. Pictures also showed Love posing next to expensive sports cars.

Love's official bio read: "Grind don't stop. Suisse made. NFL Wide Receiver @49ers #undrafted Trust god."

Investigators believe Love may have taken video clips from actual NFL players' social media accounts and then posted them on his own account claiming he was the person in them.

The accused used dating apps to connect with people

Prosecutors allege that Love met the women through dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Facebook Dating. Love was speaking to several women at one time and convinced each one that he was a 49ers and that he was rich.

Chan was introduced as Love's financial adviser. Chan and Love allegedly went so far as to create a fake mobile bank account that showed Love had more than $30 million in it.

Women sent money to Love through eTransfer and payment apps, and he "coached some victims on how and where to take out personal loans."

The big takeaway is that it's always wise to be a little suspicious and do your research when meeting people online. It's all about being cautious.
