For a lot of people, Eggo waffles are the breakfast you grew up eating before school, the freezer staple that's somehow always there, and, thanks to Stranger Things, practically a pop culture icon. Now, Eggo is giving that classic breakfast a healthier twist with its first-ever Zero Sugar waffles.

And unlike many "better-for-you" foods, Eggo says fans won't have to give up the taste they know. The brand is launching Eggo Zero in two familiar varieties: Buttermilk Zero Waffles and Blueberry Zero Waffles. The Buttermilk version sticks closely to the classic Eggo experience, with the brand's signature crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside texture. On the other hand, the Blueberry option adds real blueberries for people who prefer a sweeter start to the morning.

Instead of traditional added sugar, Eggo Zero uses monk fruit extract and stevia extract for sweetness. The company says the waffles contain 0 grams of added sugar while still delivering the taste consumers expect from Eggo.

Protein is part of the pitch too

Eggo is not positioning these waffles as just another diet food. The company says Eggo Zero contains complete protein, meaning it provides all nine essential amino acids in recommended amounts per serving. That puts the new waffles alongside the brand's existing protein-focused products, including its protein waffles and pancakes.

Food companies across nearly every grocery aisle are racing to meet demand for products with less sugar, more protein, simpler ingredients, and better nutritional profiles. Consumers still want convenience, but they also want foods that align with health goals. Eggo appears to be betting that customers want to have a mix of nostalgia and nutrition.
