It's the end of an era as Sam's Club announces a hike to its membership fees. With Sam's opening the floodgates, Costco and BJ's could be thinking about doing the same thing.

Membership rises for the first time in four years

For the first time in four years, Walmart-owned Sam's Club is raising membership prices. Starting on May 1, 2026, members will need to shell out an additional $10 for their membership, bringing it to $60 for the basic membership.

If you currently have Plus Membership, you'll also need to pay $10 more. This will bring your membership to $120 for the year.

Blame the economy for the membership fee hike

When it comes to what's behind the price hike, you can point your finger at the economy. Sure, inflation isn't what it was a few years ago, but costs are still rising.

The unexpected and sudden rise in gas prices is just one input that is wreaking havoc on many businesses' bottom lines.

There's also a change in customer habits. Many are now prioritizing deals and value over anything else. It makes stores like Sam's Club even more attractive to shoppers.

Because shoppers are seeing the value in memberships at warehouse retail stores like Sam's Club, Costco, and BJ's Wholesale, these stores are now upgrading their offerings. Those upgrades require investment.

There is a focus on improving services and the in-store experience. Sam's Club offers the Scan & Go feature at checkout, which is wildly popular with shoppers.

This feature alone keeps many shoppers coming back and renewing their membership.

You can bet that BJ's and Costco will be watching the reaction to the membership fee increase, and likely weighing their options.

You may want to renew now

If you're a member at any of these warehouse retailers, or you were thinking about getting a membership, now may be the time to do it. With prices rising on May 1, you've only got a short window of time.
