Dollar General shoppers could be eligible for a payout under new $8.5 million settlement
If you've shopped at Dollar General recently, you may be eligible for part of a large settlement with the retailer. The chain is facing a payout worth $8.5 million for charging customers a higher price than what was advertised on the shelf.
Inflated prices at the cash register
It's true that prices are rising, but if your recent trip to Dollar General seemed higher than you calculated while picking items off the shelf, you may be right. The company is paying out a huge settlement for charging customers inflated prices at the cash register.
The country's consumer rights laws are very specific. Whatever price the retailer advertises on the shelf for a particular product must be honored at the cash register.
That means if you're told at the cash register it was a sale price that is no longer valid, or human error, that's on the retailer - not you as the customer.
Dollar General doesn't admit to any wrongdoing
Even though the retail giant has to pay a large settlement, it's not admitting to any wrongdoing. The inflated prices took place between Oct. 10, 2016 and Nov. 19, 2025.
That's a pretty long period, and covers a huge range of items in the store. It's not just one location, either; the settlement covers thousands of locations.
On top of the overcharging payout, Dollar General will also pay $6.5 million to fix its pricing issues. This should prevent discrepancies in the future.
What to do if you've been overcharged
Getting your share of the payout is a bit of a process. You'll need documented evidence that shows you were overcharged.
If you're eligible, you'll be paid $10 or the amount you were overcharged. You can get up to $20, or two payments per household.
To help smooth things over, Dollar General is awarding all class members a $3 discount to be used in the store.
Always be an informed customer
There's a great lesson to be learned here. That's to be aware of the pricing on the shelf vs what you're charged at the register. Remember, the store has to honor the advertised price.
