Consumer shopping habits are changing, especially at the grocery store. With processed snack sales on the decline, date sales have surged a whopping 33% as people look for healthier, more nutritious options.

An unexpected boost in popularity

If someone told you that dates would suddenly become an ultra-popular snack food in 2026, you may have disagreed. The fact is, that's exactly where we are.

A 33% increase in sales in 2025 is massive, and that growth has continued into 2026, according to Fortune Business Insights. Experts predict the global date market is on track to skyrocket to over $55 billion by 2034.

Dates are a new trend but not a new recommendation

Dates are absolutely having a moment right now and seem to be trending everywhere. All you have to do is search healthy recipes on social media, and you're bound to find countless of recipes using dates.

It's almost as if dates are a new product, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Dietitians have been heavily leaning into dates for decades, thanks to all their health benefits.

"While dates might be a newer trend for consumers, they have been the go-to ingredient among dietitians to sweeten smoothies and lower-sugar dessert foods for years," said Lisa Moskovitz, a registered dietitian and founder of the NY Nutrition Group.

Many factors are behind the date trend

Consumers are now looking for less-processed, whole-food, organic, and healthy options to add to their diet.

Those who enjoy cooking and baking at home are learning that dates can be used as a natural sugar, easily replacing refined white sugar. They can also be eaten on their own as a quick, easy, and nutritious snack.

Get in on the trend

If you're new to the whole date trend, this is the perfect time to pick some up and give them a try. There's no shortage of recipes online, and you may be shocked just how much you like them.
