Crew digging sewer accidentally uncovers $10 million in gold
A construction crew in Belgium got a huge surprise at what seemed like a typical job site. The crew was building a new sewer below a former brewery when they discovered $10.4 million in gold.
Construction workers were confused about what they found
Not only was this a surprising find, but construction workers were so confused they first thought it was a bunch of 1 Euro coins. Instead, it was pieces of gold worth a small fortune.
"Our first reaction was actually disbelief, surprise. Of course, we didn't expect to find gold," said Kobe, an 18-year-old construction worker on the site.
The workers were on hand to remove a piece of foundation to lay down pipe for the sewer.
"They shouted, 'We found gold'" said Mario, the project leader at the site. "I went to look and took the gold in my hands. We also continued to dig up new coins and bars. Only then did what we had found really dawn."
Police were immediately contacted
After the construction workers realized they stumbled across something important, they immediately contacted the police in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, a Flemish community outside Brussels.
All the gold was cataloged by the police and then put in a high-security federal government vault.
Under Belgian law, the construction workers who found the gold don't get to keep it. It will be kept safe since the rightful owners can claim it within five years.
Gold could be used for welfare support
The building where the gold was found is owned by an organization that provides the Flemish community with welfare support.
The director of that building has hopes the gold can be used for good. He described it as an "enormous need we experience daily."
You never know what you could find
It's stories like these that make it understandable why people go out and buy metal detectors. You just have no idea what you may find.
