Build-A-Bear recalls 36,000 plush bears due to choking hazard
You'd think that giving your kid a teddy bear is safe enough, but that may not be the case. Popular retailer Build-A-Bear has recalled 36,000 plush bears citing a potential choking hazard.
Bear's zipper slider could cause a risk
Plush teddy bears are usually a pretty safe bet to give your child, which is why this product recall may seem like a surprise.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a product recall for the Build-A-Bear Heartwarming Hugs Weighted Plush Bear.
The bear has a slider attached to its zipper. That slider can potentially be a choking hazard for kids, especially younger kids.
Parent reported an issue with the zipper
The issue with the zipper was reported by a parent in the UK. Their child was playing with the bear when the zipper slider detached.
This particular bear has a side pouch in a heart shape. That heart is a pouch filled with 2.5 lbs of ceramic beads. The beads can be heated or cooled, and are held in place by a zipper.
The good news is that no injuries have been reported at this time.
Refunds are available
If you did happen to purchase this bear, the company is offering refunds either in-store or on its website. Your refund will be in the original form of payment or a gift card.
There are 36,000 bears in the recall. It applies to bears purchased online and in-store between January and March.
You can also check the model on your bear to be sure. The model number is 034464. You'll find the model number on the bear's label on the back of one of its legs.
Just because it's cute doesn't automatically make it safe
Yeah, teddy bears are ultra cute and cuddly, but this just goes to show parents need to constantly look out for potential hazards.
