Blue Cross Blue Shield is sending $333 checks to 6 million Americans next month
Blue Cross Blue Shield is about to start sending out settlement payments to millions of Americans, and if you had one of their plans years ago, this could include you.
We’re talking real money, not points or credits. Actual checks.
This all comes from a long-running class-action case involving Blue Cross Blue Shield. The lawsuit accused the company and its affiliates of limiting competition by dividing up markets, which allegedly kept prices higher than they should have been.
Blue Cross Blue Shield denied those claims. But after years of back-and-forth, the case ended in a massive $2.67 billion settlement.
And now, the money is finally moving
After legal fees and admin costs, about $1.9 billion is being distributed to people who filed valid claims. That’s roughly 6 million policyholders.
The average payout is about $333 per claim. Not life-changing money but it’s definitely not nothing.
The amount each person gets is based on how much they paid in premiums and how long they were covered. Then, the remaining settlement pool gets divided up across everyone eligible.
It is worth noting that people whose payout is $5 or less won’t actually receive anything.
Who gets paid
The catch here is that you only qualify if you had a Blue Cross or Blue Shield plan between 2008 and 2020 and if you filed a claim before November 2021.
If you did not file back then, you’re out. And if you already filed a claim, you do not need to take any action right now. The company says it is reviewing claims, sending out emails and postcards with details, and issuing payments starting May 2026.
If they contact you, follow the instructions. Otherwise, it is basically a waiting game.
