Another popular streaming service will shut down this month
It seems as though the era of never-ending streaming services may be coming to a close. Paramount Global announces that it's winding down the BET+ streaming platform, which will no longer be available after mid-August.
Fewer streaming options for viewers
It doesn't seem like that long ago that just about every network was releasing its own streaming service. Now we seem to be on the downwards trend, as these services face stiffer competition and pricing constraints.
The standalone BET+ streaming platform will consolidate with Paramount+. This is part of the company's new strategy of slimming down the standalone options and pushing its flagship service.
What it means for subscribers
If you're a subscriber of BET+, you may already have been alerted about the wind-down. You can switch to the Paramount+ service at a discounted price if you choose.
For those who make the move to Paramount+, you can expect original content, specials, and movies to migrate over. Not all of the content will make the move, but you'll still be able to view some of it.
Those who don't want to pay the price for Paramount+ can check out the free ad-supported Pluto TV platform, where some of the BET+ content will also appear.
Plans to make content more widely available
One of the reasons Paramount Global has decided to end the BET+ streaming platform is that they "want to make the content available to a larger global audience." By shifting the content to the main platform, Paramount can reach a much larger subscriber base.
The network is citing shows like "All the Queen's Men", "Zatima", and "Sistas," that will now be available on Paramount+.
Paramount purchased Tyler Perry Studios' minority ownership stake (25%) in the BET+ streaming platform. This gave Paramount 100% full ownership of BET+, allowing them to pull the plug.
A good time to look at what's offered
This is a great time to browse the content offered on Paramount+ if you're a BET+ subscriber and decide whether it appeals to you. You can at least take advantage of the discount offer.
