Aldi quietly eliminates 44 harmful ingredients from its private label products
If you're on a clean eating journey, Aldi is about to make your life a little easier. The store is removing 44 ingredients from its private label offerings by December 2027.
A goal for simpler ingredients
This move aligns with the retailer's goal to use "simpler ingredients" and better appeal to what consumers are looking for nowadays.
The whole clean eating journey was just a phase at the beginning, but now with new regulations and laws that align with healthy eating, it's no longer a phase.
Curious about the ingredients on the chopping block? It includes things such as artificial preservatives, flavors, colors, and sweeteners.
List of banned ingredients grows
Aldi isn't just removing some ingredients, it's also expanding its list of banned ingredients. It's a massive jump from 13 to 57.
The grocer is used to making bold moves where banned ingredients are concerned, though. If you've been a longtime shopper, you may remember it was one of the first stores to remove certified synthetic colors from its private label in 2015.
Besides giving consumers more consistency, it also sends a message to suppliers about what the grocer is focusing on and the products it wants to carry.
Consumers aren't the only push
Even though consumers' habits are driving the decision in a big way, it's not the only factor. Aldi is also citing the government's move to reassess the safety of food preservatives and what's required on labels.
As the chain works towards its December 2027 goal, it's about to be very strict with ingredients.
Private label items "must meet the company's rigorous sourcing, testing and ingredient standards."
Grocery shopping will be transparent and potentially easier
Aldi's moves make it really easy for consumers to stick to a cleaner, healthier diet. If you are frustrated by the lack of transparency and choice when it comes to groceries, it looks like Aldi has heard you.
