It's not a red alert yet, but Albertsons is sounding the alarm on customer demand. The grocer is warning that sales are decreasing and customers are more cautious than ever as they look for the best value available.

Weaker grocery demand is here

Call it a sign of the times, or just changing consumer habits. No matter how you cut it, Albertsons is warning that weaker grocery demand is here.

Customers are facing ever-climbing grocery bills, and their pay isn't keeping pace. This means they are cutting back on what and how much they buy in the grocery store. There's also demand for value. Customers want to know they are getting the best value possible.

Albertsons has gone so far as to lower its 2026 fiscal sales earnings outlook. Consider it the canary in the coal mine. Other grocers are already feeling the same pressure, or are about to.

Sales now expected to decline in 2026

What's worse than flat sales? Declining sales, and that's what Albertsons is now predicting. The chain originally predicted 1% sales growth for 2026. It now predicts a sales decline of 0.5% to 1%. That may not sound huge, but in the business world, that kind of swing is massive.

Bucking the trend are online sales. Albertsons reported a digital sales increase of an impressive 13% in the quarter ended June 20.

"In the first quarter, our digital and pharmacy businesses continued to deliver strong growth, while core grocery faced increasing pressure from softer industry unit trends and a more cautious consumer," said Albertsons CEO Susan Morris in the company’s earnings release.

Goal to increase customer value

The company plans to tackle the downward trend by focusing on customer value. It's all about the deal nowadays.

"We are choosing to accelerate investments in our customer value proposition and the customer experience ahead of expected productivity benefits because we believe these actions will improve our growth trajectory, strengthen our competitive position, and create long-term shareholder value," Morris said.

Better value is a win for customers

With Albertsons looking to give better value and bang for your buck, it's a win for you next time you go shopping.
