Why your next candy bar will be swavory and swangy
The strange new snack trend coming to store shelves
Snack flavors are getting weird, but very intentionally weird. Food brands are leaning hard into mashups that sound chaotic on paper but irresistible in practice. “Swicy” (sweet and spicy) was just the beginning. Now the flavor lab is pushing into an even stranger territory called “swangy” and “swavory.” The former is a combination of spicy, sweet, and tangy while the latter blends spicy, sweet, and savory.
However they will be received, “swangy” and “swavory” snacks are coming to shelves fast. And if you’ve seen tamarind gummies, chili chocolate, or spicy caramel snacks popping up lately, you’ve sort of already tasted the early wave.
Snacks are having a main character moment
A big driver here is Gen Z’s obsession with novelty. According to a study conducted by Nestlé, nearly half of consumers say a weird new flavor alone is enough to make them try a brand for the first time. So, basically, if it sounds strange and unlikely, it sells. As Mike Van Houten, vice president of commercial excellence at Nestlé, put it, “people want to experiment” and have “things that surprise and delight.”
But there’s a twist. People do not want outright chaos. They still want a touch of familiar sprinkled into the weird. That explains why brands are mixing familiar flavors like vanilla, caramel, and cherry with global spices, tangy fruits, and other unexpected ingredients.
The trend is not driven by taste alone. The full sensory experience is also a huge factor here. Crunchy + gummy combos like Nerds Gummy Clusters blew up because they feel fun to eat. Freeze-dried candy is exploding for the same reason: big flavor, unexpected crunch, oddly satisfying ASMR energy.
The internet is absolutely fueling this
None of this happens without social media. Thanks to TikTok, what used to be weird food combos have now become a full-blown discovery engine these days. All it would take is one viral snack mashup and suddenly every brand would want their own “swavory” and “swangy” moment. So, get your taste buds ready for the new snack trend and don’t expect the flavor mashup to stop anytime soon.
