Why Walmart is changing every price tag in America
Shoppers, it's time to do the happy dance. Walmart has solved the issue of shelf prices not matching the checkout price with new digital shelf labels.
High-tech labels for consistent pricing
There is nothing more annoying than scanning your items at the cash register only to have them ring in at a different price than the shelf price tag. Waiting for someone to do a price check cuts into your time and patience.
There are more than 120,000 products on the shelves in a typical Walmart store. Now just imagine how impossible it is to make sure all those physical price labels are up-to-date and reflect weekly sales, promotions, price drops and so on.
Digital shelf labels will ensure "prices remain consistent" since they can be updated quickly and easily.
A centralized system for updates
The new digital shelf labels have already rolled out in 2,300 stores across the U.S. Walmart plans to unveil the technology in all its remaining locations within a year.
All price changes now happen in a centralized location on a digital app. Once the price is changed in the system, the store will immediately show the updated label.
Walmart sets the record straight
Walmart is making it clear to shoppers that the goal is to change how the prices are displayed, not set. It is to enhance the shopping experience so you don't have to question whether prices are accurate or not.
Prices will still be associate-led and need review and approval. This keeps them transparent and consistent. Updates will usually be made overnight, so there's no confusion as you're browsing the aisles.
Be on the lookout for the cool new tech
If you haven't spotted the new digital shelf labels in your local Walmart yet, it's only a matter of time. You know what you see on the shelf will show up at the checkout.
