Walmart adds thousands of gas stations for fuel discounts
If you already pay for Walmart+, you might want to stop ignoring that little gas savings perk. The retailer is adding more than 4,000 CITGO stations to its Walmart+ Gas Savings program, taking the total number of participating locations from about 13,000 to more than 17,000 across the U.S. That’s a jump of more than 30% and it means Walmart+ members now have a lot more places to knock a few cents off their gas bill.
The discount is 10 cents per gallon at participating CITGO stations.
How to get the CITGO discount
To get the CITGO discount, members need to activate the benefit through the Walmart app and create or link a Club CITGO account. At the pump, they enter their Club CITGO phone number before paying. The 10-cent-per-gallon Walmart+ discount is then applied automatically.
Members can also stack the Walmart+ discount with additional rewards through CITGO’s Club CITGO loyalty program.
The expansion of the program is coming at a particularly convenient time, as gas prices have been climbing, with the national average reaching $4.31 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA. That’s $1.14 more than the same time last year. Walmart says the average member who uses its Gas Savings benefit saves more than $100 a year on fuel, more than the cost of a Walmart+ subscription.
The program already works at participating Walmart, Exxon, Mobil, and Murphy stations, along with member fuel prices at Sam’s Club. CITGO now pushes the network past 17,000 locations.
More than just pocket change
For people who drive a lot for work, even a 10-cent discount can matter. Research from PYMNTS Intelligence and WorkWhile found that rising fuel costs are already changing how some workers make employment decisions. Among labor-economy workers affected by higher fuel prices, 15% have turned down a shift because the commute was not worth the pay, while another 16% have worked fewer days to save on gas.
With thousands more CITGO locations joining the Walmart+ Gas Savings program, Walmart+ members now have more chances to use it.
