Trump gets approval for gold coin in his likeness
Collectors will soon be able to get their hands on a new coin meant to celebrate the United States' 250th birthday. The new coin will feature President Donald Trump, despite federal laws stipulating no living president can appear on U.S. currency.
Coin production gets the green light
The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts passed a vote that will allow a coin with the President on it. This means the U.S. Mint has the go-ahead to start production.
“As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump,” said U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach.
Not the norm
If you thought there was a law that prohibited living presidents from appearing on U.S. currency, you're right. This new move goes against conventional past practices and the law. Megan Sullivan, the acting chief of the Office of Design Management at the Mint, said that the Treasury secretary can circumvent that law.
According to Sullivan, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has the power to authorize the minting and issuance of new 24-karat gold coins.
What to expect from the design
The new coin will feature the President with a serious face, fists resting on what is supposed to be a desk, and a forward-leaning stance. The words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" will be on the coin. The dates "1776-2026" will also feature on the coin.
On the flip side will be the bald eagle with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
A piece of history you can own
There is no word yet on how much this new coin will cost you, when it will be available, or how many will be produced.
