TJ Maxx reveals list of store closures nationwide

It looks like you may have fewer discount retail stores to shop in very soon. T.J. Maxx has already closed several locations this year and says more will be coming as part of its new ongoing real estate strategy.

Retailer not shutting down

With locations closing in 2026 and more to come, it's only natural customers are questioning the strategy. According to the retailer, it's not about a nationwide shutdown; instead, it is the company's new and ongoing real estate strategy.

"We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking," a T.J. Maxx spokesperson told The U.S. Sun.

"Store fleet expansion involves creating the right store formats in the right locations for the right audience, which can require some pivots over time," Elizabeth Lafontaine of Placer.ai told Inc.

Reports show that the parent company, The TJX Companies, is expanding its overall store footprint. It has more than 5,000 locations worldwide.

Closures can fund growth

Shoppers typically assume store closures are a negative thing and mean the company is likely in trouble.

According to the founder of Overstock Trader, Gregg Schwartz, in an interview with Inc., closures can actually help fund growth instead of slowing it. Closures can give a company more cash to inject into other markets.

Reports don't show a nationwide store-closing effort from T.J. Maxx, but there are some that have shut down.

The stores identified to close are:

  • 360 Newbury Street, Boston, Massachusetts
  • Ellsworth Place, Silver Spring, Maryland
  • 1262 Vocke Road, Cumberland, Maryland

Still a large US footprint

Looking at the numbers, that leaves more than 1,300 T.J. Maxx stores in operation across the country. In August alone, the retailer opened new locations such as five in Massachusetts.

The parent company also owns HomeSense, HomeGoods, Marshalls and Sierra.

May just need to travel a little further

While T.J. Maxx isn't closing up shop, with some closures happening you may need to travel a little further to find a nearby location.
