Thousands of Horizon chocolate milk cartons recalled in 4 states

Getting your daily milk fix is important for your health, but you may want to hold off for a moment. The FDA has recalled thousands of chocolate milk cartons from Horizon across four states due to a packaging issue.

The FDA gives it the Class II level

The Horizon Organic Chocolate Organic Lowfat Milk was initially recalled on March 11. On May 5, the product was classified by the FDA as a Class II recall.

While that change may not seem like a big deal, a Class II recall means drinking the milk "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences."

The packaging is to blame

So what's the problem? Neither Horizon nor the FDA is saying much. In the product recall, the FDA states the "milk carton's packaging integrity is compromised."

More than 3,500 cases of milk are affected by the recall. If you've got some in your house, you're being told to dispose of it or return it for a refund.

Read your packaging before drinking the milk

It's important to read the labeling on your milk to see if you've got the one in question.

The recalled product is a shelf-stable eight-ounce carton of Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk Box with DHA Omega-3 and was sold in six and 18-pack boxes.

The milk was sold in Oregon, California, Arizona, and Nevada. The UPC on the carton is 742365004322, the UPC on the case is 742365004322, and the item number is 136518.

A few more important details for you are that it has a "best by" date of Aug. 14 and 15, 2026. It was distributed by Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC (Horizon) 12303 Airport Way, Suite 200, Broomfield, CO 80021.

Not worth the risk

Remember, even if you're unsure your milk is the one affected, it doesn't hurt to check further. With a Class II recall, you don't want to take chances.
