The past few years haven't been kind to theaters across America and internationally. Fewer people watching movies in the theater means fewer earnings. The world's largest movie theater chain has said it will close more theaters than it will open in 2026. It's more than a sign of the times, it feels like the winding down of the theater era.

Why shut down theaters?

AMC has stated that closing down locations makes the most sense financially, and will ultimately help its bottom line.

All you have to do is take a look at the many streaming platforms, and it's easy to see why AMC is suffering from smaller attendance numbers. Just think back to the last time you went to the movies in person. There's a good chance you've streamed a handful of movies during that time.

Pretty much everyone can relate to the high cost of living too. You can easily spend $50 or more on admission for two, drinks, and a bag of popcorn.

AMC reports lower earnings than the year prior

AMC's 2025 Q4 earnings were $1.28B. This is a drop of 1.4% from the same quarter the year before. The drop in revenue isn't just limited to the United States either. AMC reports that its international figures were also lower.

Total attendance in Q4 2025 was 56.3 million. That may sound like a huge number, but that's a whopping 10% drop from the same quarter in the year prior. You can't just blame a lineup of "boring movies" for a huge drop like that.

The warning signs are blinking, and AMC is taking notice.

No word on which theaters will close

If you're wondering if your local theater is on the chopping block, you'll need to wait. There is no news about which locations are closing. All the company has said is that it's targeting "underperforming" locations.

In 2025, AMC closed a location in Alabama, Georgia, Colorado, New York, and more.

Time to show support

Because there is no definitive list of which locations are closing, it's best to enjoy it while you can. If not now, then you may need to drive a lot further to find one.
