If your go-to breakfast is a bowl of your favorite cereal, then your routine may be in for a shake-up. Retail giant Target will pull all cereals with synthetic colors off the shelves. We're talking about all the big ones, including Lucky Charms, Cheerios, and so many others. You can expect the cereals to be pulled from the shelves by the end of May.

Not totally out of the blue

Even though this may be the first time you're hearing about synthetic dyes being removed, it's not out of the blue. Many have already announced their own plans to phase out synthetic dyes. In that case, Target's announcement may not change anything for them, other than potentially speeding up their plans.

Target's not alone either. You won't be able to get around the new rules by shopping at Walmart, because it has also announced plans to stop using synthetic dyes and other ingredients. Walmart's timeline is more lenient, and it isn't planning to enforce the measures until January 2027.

Consumers preferences are changing quickly

Big companies are often blamed for being too slow to react. Here's a case of them taking the lead. Target knows that by listening to customers' demands, it will remain a top choice.

"We know consumers are increasingly prioritizing healthier lifestyles, and we're moving quickly to evolve our offerings to meet their needs," said Cara Sylvester, Target's chief merchandising officer.

It's an all-hands-on-deck moment with the retailers and manufacturers working towards the same goal.

Political forces also driving the decision

As you may have guessed, there are some political pressures too. The US Health Secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, is very vocal about his MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) movement. He has targeted a whole list of ingredients.

There's a good chance manufacturers would rather act now than race to catch up to new rules.

Breakfast will have a new look

Think of it this way: the brighter the cereal is, the more likely it will be in for a revamp.
