When it comes to great deals, T.J. Maxx has long set the bar as the store where you could find incredible prices. It looks like your T.J. Maxx shopping options are about to shrink with the announcement of closures at a few longtime locations.

Company says closures aren't a red flag

With more than 1,300 stores in the United States and a massive global footprint, T.J. Maxx is a store that shoppers have come to rely on.

In January 2026, a flagship three-story location in Boston was closed, and then another location closed, this time in Silver Spring, Maryland. What makes these closures stand out is that the company claims to be in a period of growth.

The company explains the closures as "routine real estate management" and not a sign of trouble.

“We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking,” a T.J. Maxx spokesperson told the U.S. Sun.

Growth through closures

The idea that you can grow a business by closing locations may sound counterintuitive, but it's not entirely off-base.

“Chains that continue to grow their footprint nationwide benefit from more strategic location selection,” Elizabeth Lafontaine of Placer.ai, a foot-traffic data software company, told Inc. recently. “Store fleet expansion involves creating the right store formats in the right locations for the right audience, which can require some pivots over time.”

To add to the idea that T.J. Maxx is growing and not experiencing a slowdown, First Business Magazine posted that the retailer has 34 consecutive years of sales growth under its belt.

Discount retailers could still face headwinds

Despite the fact that T.J. Maxx has been able to weather consumers' changing habits so far, it doesn't mean the company is immune to consumer behavior.

“As consumers become more discerning about discretionary spending, there could be more pressures ahead,” said Lafontaine.
