Scientists reveal drinking scalding hot tea may damage heart
Not so fast before you take a sip of your tea. You may want to let it cool down for a few minutes before enjoying it. New research shows that the temperature of your tea when you drink it provides positive or negative heart health benefits.
How you drink your tea matters
Most people know that tea can be a great choice for your health. It has been linked to lowering your risk of health issues like dementia, heart disease and stroke. But now the research is taking it one step further.
The way you prepare and drink your tea also has specific health benefits.
A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine found that tea-drinking frequency, the type of tea, the temperature a person drinks it at and how strong they brewed it played a role in their health.
Specifically, tea drinking helped lower the risk of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels.
Tea should be enjoyed at a comfortable, non-scalding temperature
Perhaps the most interesting finding was about the temperature of the tea. If you drink your tea at a burning hot temperature, it actually increases your risk of vascular disease.
Researchers found the most benefits by letting your tea cool to a comfortable temperature. The study also found that those who drink tea at least three days a week were able to lower their risk of developing vascular disease by about 11%.
Black tea vs green tea isn't as big a deal as you may think
As for the type of tea you drink, black tea showed the most impressive results but green tea wasn't far off.
"I would not advise someone who enjoys green tea to switch to black tea or vice versa. Both can be part of a heart-healthy diet — especially if people take care to drink them without added sugar," explained CNN wellness expert, emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University, Dr. Leana Wen.
Introduce tea into your routine
With so many health benefits, this could be a great time to start drinking more tea.
