The days of artificial dyes seem to be ending, with more and more people demanding natural options. According to a new report from the National Confectioners Association and RTI International, sales of food with natural colors are on the rise.

People are choosing the healthier versions

You don't need to be an economic wizard to sort through the numbers and come to a conclusion about artificial dyes. Customers are choosing healthier, natural versions of products more often than not.

On the flip side, products with artificial dyes have seen a slight decrease in sales between 2024 and 2025. People couldn't be clearer about their preferences.

Manufacturers are feeling the heat

This is putting a lot of pressure on manufacturers to remove all synthetic dyes from their supply chain and shift to natural options.

The FDA has also asked the industry to eliminate all artificial dyes by the end of 2028. Some states aren't waiting for the FDA, however, and they've gone ahead and banned artificial dyes.

Synthetic dyes are especially popular in the beverage and candy industry. They produce bright colors that customers tend to associate with a specific brand and product.

Getting rid of artificial dyes completely will be a challenge in these types of products, because the items will look duller. Customers may not be as interested in the items.

The sales growth was significant

The new data should put most manufacturers' minds at ease about transitioning away from artificial dyes. The data showed that products that listed "natural colors" on their packaging increased sales by 24.4%.

Even candies that listed "natural colors" on their labels saw sales grow by almost 20%.

The customer demand is there.

Despite the interest and the FDA asking manufacturers to get rid of synthetic dyes by 2028, artificial colors are still found in the majority of products in many industries like confectionery.

Make a point with your wallet

For those who are behind the push for natural colors, you can make a point with your wallet. Spending money on items without synthetic dyes sends a strong message to companies.
