Reese's and Almond Joy ice cream bars recalled nationwide

If you have a box of Reese's or Almond Joy ice cream bars hiding in your freezer right now, you might want to check the package before grabbing dessert. The Magnum Ice Cream Company is voluntarily recalling all lots of certain Reese's Crunchy Peanut Ice Cream Bars and Almond Joy Ice Cream Bars nationwide after discovering that some of the nutritional information printed on the cartons is inaccurate.

The good news is this isn't an ingredient or allergen mix-up. The ingredients and allergen information on the packaging are correct. Still, if you rely on nutrition labels to track what you're eating, that little box of frozen happiness may be giving you the wrong numbers.

What exactly is wrong?

The company says certain nutritional information was incorrectly listed on the products' Nutrition Facts panels. The recall notice does not say which nutritional values are wrong. So if you're counting calories, tracking sugar, watching fat intake, or otherwise paying close attention to the numbers on the label, you cannot simply glance at the carton and know whether the information is accurate.

The FDA has classified the recall as Class III, which means using or being exposed to the affected products is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.

Check your freezer for these two

The recalled products are Reese's Crunchy Peanut Ice Cream Bars and Almond Joy Ice Cream Bars. For the former, look out for six-count packages and UPC: 8-40473-40024-5. Almond Joy Ice Cream Bars are the ones with a UPC of 8-40473-40029-0. All lot codes are included for both products.

The recall extends to the retail store level.

What should you do if you have recalled bars?

SpartanNash, which posted the recall notice, says consumers who purchased the affected bars should not eat them. Instead, return the product to the store for a refund or replacement.

Before you unwrap that Reese's or Almond Joy bar, take a quick look at the package. If the UPC matches one of the recalled products, send it back to the store. Your ice cream can wait.
