Only five Sears stores remain after years of closures
While some may not remember the days of Sears being a retail giant, it really wasn't that many decades ago. At one point, it had 3,500 locations across the country, earning the title of the biggest retailer. Fast forward to today, with only five stores left, the landscape couldn't be more stark.
The downfall of a giant
Sears was known for selling name-brand clothing, furniture, appliances, toys, home decor, and more. For many, it was a one-stop shop providing them with everything they needed.
“The company has been on a death spiral for well over a decade,” said former Sears executive Mark Cohen. “It lost sight of the fact that change is a constant.”
The retailer didn't become a victim of its own success; it refused to identify market shifts, changing consumer habits, and the modern retail industry as a whole. What worked 30 years ago seems out of date and irrelevant to shoppers today.
Just think about how often you purchase items online. It's fast, easy, and convenient. There is no desire to go back to days past, when you had to drive to the nearest mall to do your shopping. Stores that have remained fluid and flexible have proven to be the most resilient. Unfortunately, Sears isn't one of them.
The competition became too fierce
It's more than just changing times, though; it's also about the competition. Everyone is looking for a good deal. No one wants to over-pay, and that means relying on price-competitive retailers like Amazon and Walmart.
Sears had a very difficult time competing with these lower-cost options. It wasn't just cost, it was also hard to compete in terms of variety and inventory.
The fate of the final five locations remains uncertain
As it stands, the remaining stores are in Orlando, FL; Coral Gables, FL; Concord, CA; Braintree, MA and El Paso, TX. This means that if you want to get a sense of just how impactful Sears was in the retail industry, it's wise to visit a location sooner rather than later. There's no telling how long the remaining handful will last.
