Ohio man sues Taco Bell over severe parasitic infection

An Ohio man got more than he bargained for when he recently dined at Taco Bell. He is now suing the Taco Bell franchisee, claiming that its meal made him sick for two weeks with a Cyclospora infection.

Cyclosporiasis outbreak continues in the US

The cyclosporiasis outbreak has been big news for the past couple of weeks, with many people getting sick.

Mohammed Ayyad claims his infection came from meals he ate at a North Olmsted, OH, Taco Bell. His illness and symptoms were so bad that he was forced to miss two weeks of work.

In his lawsuit, he states that he ate two meals with items he normally eats at the restaurant. He ate at Taco Bell on June 14 and then again on June 21. His symptoms started on June 23.

Symptoms worsened quickly

Ayyad stated that his symptoms quickly spiraled to a fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. He finally went to a healthcare provider on July 2 and provided a stool sample.

On July 9, he was informed that he contracted cyclosporiasis and required antibiotics. All in all, the ordeal cost him two weeks of work. In his lawsuit, he's asking for damages for medical and pharmaceutical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

A multi-state outbreak

The Cyclospora outbreak has spread across a handful of states, with the CDC and local public health agencies rushing to get a hold on things.

The CDC is investigating infections specifically linked with shredded iceberg lettuce that was sold at certain Taco Bell locations.

So far, there have been 1,644 confirmed and recorded infections that are related to exposure to Taco Bell.

Infections took place from May 13 to July 13. They've resulted in almost 100 hospitalizations. As of right now, there haven't been any deaths related to the outbreak.

People are left wondering how they can avoid it

Because there are still so many questions about the outbreak, where it originated, and how to get it under control, it's leaving people pretty confused about how they can avoid getting it.
