The rumors are true! Xbox’s next console will be doing something a little different. Microsoft just confirmed Project Helix, the codename for its next-gen Xbox, and it’s designed to play both Xbox titles and PC games, which could blur the line between console gaming and PC gaming more than ever. Let’s dive in.

The lines are blurring between consoles and PCs

The announcement came from Asha Sharma, Microsoft’s new gaming CEO who just stepped into the role after longtime Xbox leader Phil Spencer retired. In a post on X, Sharma confirmed the codename Project Helix and said the new console will focus on performance and flexibility, including support for PC games.

Historically, consoles and PCs have lived in separate worlds. Xbox ran Xbox games and PC ran PC games. But Microsoft has spent years trying to blend the two ecosystems and has increasingly leaned into the idea that players should be able to play anywhere.

Project Helix looks like the next step in that plan. If the console really supports PC titles directly, it could turn Xbox into something closer to a hybrid gaming machine. Think console convenience with PC-level game access.

This could reset the narrative for Xbox

The announcement lands at an interesting time for Xbox, which has gone through layoffs, studio closures, and a wave of criticism after some formerly exclusive games started appearing on PlayStation and Nintendo systems.

At the same time, Microsoft also became one of gaming’s biggest publishers after buying Activision Blizzard for $69 billion. So the strategy around Xbox hardware has felt a little… uncertain. Project Helix could be the first real sign of where Xbox goes next.

It’s mostly a mystery right now

While Microsoft has confirmed the direction, no details have been provided. Nobody knows the specs, the design, the release window, or even the price. That last one, in particular, could be tricky. Hardware components like memory and storage have been getting more expensive, which means next-gen consoles might not be cheap.

Nevertheless, the next wave of details is expected soon at GDC, where Sharma will be speaking with developers and partners.

The internet reaction so far

The gaming community is split. Some fans are excited about the idea of a console that behaves more like a PC. Others are wondering if this was inevitable since Microsoft has already been pushing its “play anywhere” philosophy for years.

Either way, the announcement has kicked off a lot of speculation about what Project Helix actually looks like. Does it look like a more powerful console or a hybrid PC-console or something closer to a living-room gaming computer? Right now, Microsoft isn’t saying.
