They say things improve with age, and it looks like that may be true. A new study finds that nearly half of seniors over the age of 65 show improvement in physical and cognitive function by changing their mindset.

Age doesn't really matter

Scientists may be able to back up the theory that age isn't anything but a number. When people say age is a state of mind, they may be onto something. And there's data to prove it.

"In contrast to a predominant belief or stereotype that age is a time of continuous and inevitable decline, we found evidence that a meaningful number of older persons actually show improvement over 12 years in cognitive and/or physical health," said the study's lead author, Becca Levy, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at Yale.

A powerful and positive mindset about aging looks to be very effective.

The study was conducted across a wide population

Researchers looked at a diverse group of over 11,000 participants. That meant anyone over the age of 65 had the same chances of improvement. The results were gathered over a span of 12 years.

The data showed that 45% of participants had improvements either physically or mentally. Of those 45%, 32% of people had an improvement in cognitive skills, and 28% had physical improvements.

What the results mean

The results are somewhat of a life lesson you could hold onto. Researchers found that positive age beliefs led to higher outcomes in physical abilities (walking speed) and cognitive skills.

Simple changes, positive results

The study will no doubt create a stir and generate interest in the science community, but for everyday people, it can be just as interesting. You can start changing the way you think about your age right now and set yourself up for success.
