Nationwide recall issued for popular garlic powder after bacterial contamination risk

It's time to check your kitchen cupboard for a possible contamination risk. A nationwide Class 2 recall has been issued by the CFIA for Heavenly Spices garlic powder due to potential bacterial contamination.

Spice sold in Dollarama stores across Canada

Garlic powder is one of the most common spices to cook with, making this recall potentially pretty big. If you've bought garlic powder at a Dollarama in Canada, there is a good chance you need to throw it out.

Heavenly Spices garlic powder may be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, which is a bacterium that can give you abdominal cramps, nausea, watery diarrhea, and vomiting.

"Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product," reads the CFIA recall notice.

Short-term or non-life-threatening health effects

Class 2 recalls mean you could have short-term or non-life-threatening health effects. It's not the most serious level, but it means you don't want to take any chances consuming it.

A Bacillus cereus infection typically lasts 24–48 hours, which means you'll be down at least a couple of days and probably miss work.

This type of bacterium can be found in stews, vanilla sauce, meat, gravies, and even cooked rice if it was not properly refrigerated.

You can apply for a replacement or e-gift card

Dollarama has put out its own notice, asking shoppers to throw the garlic powder away if they bought it. The recalled product was sold in stores and online in a 70-gram container.

And don't worry, you aren't out any money.

"Customers can also contact Dollarama Customer Service directly for a $2.00 e-gift card as a replacement," the spokesperson said.

Better safe than sorry

Even if you can't remember how long ago you purchased the specific brand of garlic powder, it's always better to be safe than sorry and get rid of it.
