Mountain Dew and Trolli launch new candy soda
Mountain Dew has apparently decided that regular soda flavors are for quitters. The latest experiment from the caffeine-fueled flavor laboratory is a new collaboration with gummy candy brand Trolli, and this time the inspiration comes from Trolli's Spicy Crawlers.
Meet Mountain Dew Trolli Mango Pineapple Punch, a limited-edition tropical soda blending mango, pineapple, and a little strawberry into one aggressively fruity can. And no, despite taking inspiration from spicy gummy worms, the soda itself won't set your mouth on fire.
Your spicy gummy worms just got a beverage
Trolli's Spicy Crawlers come in three flavors: Pineapple Habanero, Mango Habanero, and Strawberry Habanero. Mountain Dew pretty much looked at that lineup and thought, What if we put all three in a soda?
The result is Mango Pineapple Punch, which takes the tropical fruit flavors and combines them with strawberry. The habanero heat, however, stays out of the bottle. So if you're hoping for a soda that tastes like someone dropped a hot pepper into a tropical fruit punch, sorry. You'll need the actual Spicy Crawlers for that experience.
Mountain Dew is listening to the soda nerds
There is another reason this collaboration might make fans happy. You get a choice between regular and zero sugar. Last year's Mountain Dew Trolli Cherry Lemon collaboration was only offered as a zero-sugar drink, which left some fans asking for the full-sugar version. Mountain Dew listened.
Mango Pineapple Punch is coming in both full-sugar and zero-sugar versions, so nobody has to feel their beverage preferences don't matter.
Where can you get it?
The new soda is rolling out to retailers nationwide for a limited time, with cans and bottles available through October. You can also find it at participating Pizza Hut locations, because apparently pizza and neon-orange tropical soda remain one of humanity's most enduring combinations.
There is also a special bundle available through Walmart.com containing a 20-ounce bottle of Mango Pineapple Punch, a 20-ounce bottle of the Zero Sugar version, and a bag of Trolli Spicy Crawlers.
Mountain Dew in its flavor-chaos era
Last year's Cherry Lemon collaboration proved that candy-inspired soda could work well enough to get a sequel. Now, Mango Pineapple Punch is taking things somewhere even more tropical.
And unlike some limited-edition internet foods that exist mainly to generate memes for three days, this collaboration is actually sticking around until October.
